Arsenal looked for a long while like they were going to bring an end to City's dominance, only to fade away in the closing weeks, but they look set to come back stronger next term.

The Gunners are not alone in that regard. After a fine first season at Manchester United Erik ten Hag will be eager to build on some solid foundations, while Chelsea's decision to hire Mauricio Pochettino means they are eager to improve and compete at the top of the English game again.

Liverpool are expected to bounce back after a drop in standards last season, while Newcastle are another side to watch in the outright market after an unexpected top-four finish last term.

Manchester City set the standard

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City were not as dominant as they have been in the Premier League in previous years, but they ended the season in fine form to thwart Arsenal’s hopes.

A run of 16 top-flight matches without defeat allowed City to get over the line with three games to spare, giving them plenty of preparation time ahead of winning the FA Cup and Champions League to complete the treble.

Striker Erling Haaland bagged 36 league goals to help City along the way, and he could improve even further in his second season in the Premier League.

But behind the Norwegian, City’s team could look a little different this term with Ilkay Gundogan having departed for Barcelona, while Bernardo Silva is regularly linked with a move away.

Joao Cancelo is expected to be sold after spending the second half of last season on loan at Bayern Munich and there are still doubts over the future of Kyle Walker, who is a target for the Bavarians.

Mateo Kovacic has joined from Chelsea to freshen up the midfield and City are expected to make further additions before the new season begins. A new centre-back is on Guardiola’s wishlist and negotiations are said to be ongoing over an £100 million move for RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol.

City’s rivals making summer moves

City remain short-priced favourites to win what would be a fourth straight Premier League title, but their rivals are making moves to knock them off their throne.

Arsenal are currently 5/1 to get their hands on the trophy, and are showing ambition in the transfer market with Kai Havertz arriving from Chelsea and a £105 million move for Declan Rice from West Ham.

Liverpool have already signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively, and Jurgen Klopp’s side are 8/1 shots to claim their first league title since the 2019-20 season.

The Reds are expected to make an improved offer for Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs, while they are also said to be locked in talks with Southampton over a move for midfielder Romeo Lavia.

Manchester United are expected to dip into the transfer market for a new keeper following the exit of David de Gea, who failed to agree a new contract and has left on a free. The Red Devils are believed to have submitted an offer for Inter stopper Andre Onana.

United have brought in Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount on a deal until June 2028, while Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund is still believed to be a top target.

United’s ongoing ownership saga could make for a tricky summer transfer window, one in which they need to address several key areas. But if they get their recruitment right, they could give backers a run for their money at 11/1.

Pochettino hard at work

The biggest rebuild this season is taking place at Stamford Bridge as Mauricio Pochettino tries to improve Chelsea's fortunes.

Chelsea's owners have already spent £600 million on new players but have shown they are happy to keep spending with French forward Christopher Nkunku joining from RB Leipzig and Nicolas Jackson moving to London from Villarreal.

Meanwhile, Pochettino has been trimming down the squad with Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Cesar Azpilicueta the latest players to leave Stamford Bridge. The trio join Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, Kai Havertz and Kalidou Koulibaly in exiting this summer.

Magpies being selective

Newcastle have been trying to improve their squad in the lead-up to their return to the Champions League and they have added Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan for a deal worth around £55m.

The Magpies have missed out on one of their top targets, James Maddison, after he decided to make the switch from Leicester to Tottenham. Eddie Howe is still eager to bring in more quality and it’s believed that negotiations are taking place for a deal for Foxes winger Harvery Barnes.

As for Tottenham, along with Maddison, new manager Ange Postecoglou has also signed Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Manor Solomon, who played on loan at Fulham last season, is also said to be close to joining Spurs, but there are still areas of the squad that need improving and it’s unlikely the club will challenge for major honours.

The biggest deal for Spurs would certainly be keeping Harry Kane, who only has a year left on his contract and has been the subject of two bids from Bayern Munich.
